Pete Carroll in all his glory...

In the article entitle “Winning actually isn’t the only thing,” author David Maraniss contemplates the importance of winning in sports. His emotion for the article comes after seeing the infamous NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. Maraniss, a Packers fan, along with countless other NFL fans were in disbelief after seeing the call made by the “Replacement Referees” at the end of the game. He expresses his anger over the call, saying he couldn’t sleep and didn’t get over it for about 12 hours. After that time he realized it was just a football game and that winning isn’t the only thing, but he did say that his anger shifted to Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll and Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson.
What upset him was the reaction by these two men to the call that was made. Carroll jumped around “with delirious happiness”… “as if he had actually won something.” Wilson responded by saying it was “a tough call.” According to Maraniss, both reactions were unbelievable and surprising coming from Russell Wilson, former quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers, the college team Maraniss roots for.

I was born and raised in Wisconsin and I have grown up as a Packers fan. I was watching the game in which the outrageous call by the replacement refs was made. I saw the play live as well as over and over again on replay, as did so many others across the country. I was dumbfounded by the call, especially when it was confirmed after replay. I also saw the live actions and reactions of Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson. I personally thought Pete Carroll had gone mad with the way he reacted, as if the refs had actually made the right call and the Seahawks had won by some miraculous play of skill and determination. In the case of Russell Wilson though, I have a different opinion than Maraniss. Wilson reacted calmly in respectful support for his team. Can you imagine how people would have reacted had he spoke out against the call? The quarterback and leader of a football team cannot speak out against his team in any way without it ending negatively, especially after seeing such a reaction of excitement from his head coach. Had Wilson spoke against the call, he would have faced consequences when it comes to team chemistry, among other things. He did the right thing and yes, winning isn’t the only thing.

Were you watching the historical game? Are you a Packers fan? Are you a Russell Wilson fan?
What was your opinion of the call made by the Replacement Refs? I welcome your honest and respectful comments and opinions!

  1. I agree with your opinion on how Russell Wilson reacted on the grounds that he had no other choice but to be humble and respectful. I do not agree with what you said about Pete Carroll because from what he could see on the sidelines it looked like a touchdown and do not tell me that if the refs had called it an interception in the first place that Mike McCarthy would not have been jumping for joy.
